Madinah Airport to Your Hotel: What Pilgrims Should Expect

Quick answer: The trip from Madinah airport to your hotel near Masjid an-Nabawi is about 15–20 km and usually takes 20 to 40 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Plan around 30 to 45 minutes from landing to sitting in your car in quiet periods — longer in Ramadan. There is no Haramain train station at Madinah airport, so your choices are a pre-booked taxi, an airport taxi, a ride app or the 24-hour airport bus.

After you land

Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) has one modern main terminal for regular flights. After you leave the plane:

  1. Passport control: show your passport and visa. In quiet periods this can take minutes; at peak times, such as Ramadan, it can take much longer.
  2. Baggage: collect your bags and any Zamzam you brought from Makkah.
  3. Arrivals hall: you will find ATMs, money exchange, SIM card counters for the main Saudi networks and car hire. The airport also has free Wi-Fi.

Tip: buy a local SIM or turn on roaming before you leave the arrivals hall. You will want maps and WhatsApp working before you look for transport.

Madinah airport to hotel: your options

Ways to get from Madinah airport to your hotel
Option Good for Things to know
Pre-booked private taxi Families, elderly parents, late flights, lots of luggage Driver waits in arrivals with a name board; price fixed before you fly
Airport taxi rank Small groups with light bags Available 24/7; agree the price before you get in
Ride app (Uber, Careem) 1–3 people, travelling light Car size can vary; you need mobile data
Airport bus (Route 400) Solo travellers on a budget Runs 24 hours between the airport and the Prophet’s Mosque area

No train from the airport: the Haramain High Speed Railway does not stop at Madinah airport. Madinah’s train station is in Knowledge Economic City, about 7 km from the Prophet’s Mosque. If you plan to take the train to Makkah later, you will still need a car to the station.

With our Madinah Airport taxi, your driver tracks your flight, meets you inside the arrivals hall and drives you straight to your hotel. If you want to go directly to Makkah, we stop at Masjid Dhul Hulayfah (Bir Ali) so you can enter Ihram on the way.

The drive into the city

The road from the airport is a straight, modern highway into the city. Near the Prophet’s Mosque, traffic slows down, especially before and after prayers. Many hotels in the central area have drop-off points on the street, so expect a short walk with your bags if your hotel is very close to the Haram.

  • Send your hotel name and address to your driver before you land.
  • If you arrive close to a prayer time, allow extra time for traffic near the mosque.
  • Ask your driver to stop near your hotel’s main entrance, not the nearest gate of the mosque.

Planning your first visit to the Prophet’s Mosque

Many pilgrims want to visit Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah soon after they arrive. A permit through the Nusuk app is required. According to the Saudi Press Agency, the standard permit can be booked once every 365 days, and men and women have separate visiting times. Book as early as you can, because slots fill quickly.

The Prophet’s Mosque offers free manual wheelchairs at exits 309 and 343, along with lifts, escalators and ramps, which helps if you are travelling with elderly parents. See our Madinah Ziyarat guide for the sites to visit during your stay.

Leaving Madinah: Zamzam and timings

  • Zamzam: pilgrims flying out of Madinah or Jeddah with an Umrah visa can usually take one sealed 5-litre bottle bought from an official airport outlet. Airline rules differ, so check with your airline whether it counts in your baggage allowance.
  • Timing: leave your hotel with enough time for traffic near the mosque, check-in and passport control. In busy seasons, add extra time.
  • Going to Makkah instead? A Madinah to Makkah taxi can stop at the Miqat for Ihram on the way.
