Quick answer: The easiest day trips from Makkah are Taif (about 90 km, 1.5–2 hours by car, cooler mountain air and rose farms) and Jeddah (about 80–90 km, 1–1.5 hours, the historic Al-Balad district and the Corniche). AlUla is too far for a day trip from Makkah — it is best planned as an overnight trip from Madinah, which is roughly 300–350 km away.
Day trips from Makkah at a glance
| Destination | From | Approx. distance | Approx. drive | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taif | Makkah | About 90 km (via Al Hada) | 1.5–2 hrs | Cool weather, mountains, rose farms |
| Jeddah | Makkah | About 80–90 km | 1–1.5 hrs | Historic Al-Balad, sea front, shopping |
| AlUla | Madinah | Roughly 300–350 km | 3.5–4.5 hrs | Ancient sites and desert scenery — overnight trip |
Taif: the mountain city
Taif sits high in the Sarawat mountains, so it is noticeably cooler than Makkah — a welcome break, especially in summer. The road up the Al Hada mountain pass is one of the most scenic drives in the region, with hairpin bends and wide views.
Popular stops include the viewpoints on Al Hada, the Al Shafa highlands, fruit and honey stalls, and the Masjid of Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). In spring (around March–April) Taif’s famous rose farms harvest the roses used for rose oil and rose water.
Driver’s tip: The Al Hada road is steep and winding. If anyone in your family gets car sick, sit them in the front and plan a stop at the top.
Taif and the Miqat
Taif lies outside the Miqat. If you travel to Taif and plan to perform Umrah when you return to Makkah, you must enter Ihram at the Miqat on your way back: Qarn al-Manazil (at As-Sayl al-Kabir, on the main road) or Wadi Muhrim (on the Al Hada road). If you are only visiting Taif and returning to your hotel without intending Umrah, ask your scholar about the ruling for your situation.
Tell your driver in advance if you want to stop at the Miqat. It adds a little time but makes the trip much easier.
Jeddah: history by the sea
Jeddah has been the gateway for pilgrims arriving by sea for centuries. Its old town, Al-Balad, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with tall coral-stone houses and wooden balconies (rawashin), narrow lanes and traditional markets.
Other favourites include the Jeddah Corniche along the Red Sea, the Al-Rahma Mosque (often called the floating mosque), and, in the evening, the King Fahd Fountain when it is operating.
Driver’s tip: Visit Al-Balad in the late afternoon and stay for Maghrib by the sea. The lanes are cooler, and the Corniche is beautiful at sunset.
AlUla: plan it properly
AlUla, in the north-west, is known for its dramatic sandstone landscape and ancient sites, including Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is far from Makkah, so it is not a day trip from there. From Madinah it is roughly 300–350 km by road, so most visitors stay at least one night.
Some pilgrims prefer not to tour Hegra because the Prophet ﷺ, passing the dwellings of Thamud at al-Hijr, told his companions to enter only while weeping and in reflection (reported by al-Bukhari). If you visit, go with that spirit of reflection — or ask your scholar.
How to fit day trips into your Umrah
- Put day trips in the middle of your stay, not on the day you arrive or leave.
- Leave early in the morning and be back before Maghrib or Isha.
- Check opening times for any museum or attraction the day before.
- Pack water, sun protection and a light jacket for Taif in winter.
- Book a private car so you can stop where and when you want.
We run private Makkah → Taif, Makkah → Jeddah and Madinah → AlUla trips with your family’s schedule. See our services, check the vehicles, or send us your plan on WhatsApp.
