Makkah Ziyarat: Sacred Sites Every Umrah Pilgrim Should Visit

Quick answer: The main Makkah Ziyarat places are Jabal al-Nour (Cave of Hira), Jabal Thawr, Mina, Muzdalifah, Arafat (Jabal al-Rahmah), Masjid al-Jinn and Jannat al-Mu’alla. A relaxed Ziyarat tour by car takes about 4 to 5 hours. Go early in the morning, after Fajr, to avoid the heat and the crowds.

What Ziyarat means

Ziyarat simply means “visit”. For pilgrims, it means visiting places connected to the life of the Prophet Muhammad ï·º, his family, his companions, and the rites of Hajj. Visiting these places is not part of Umrah itself, but many pilgrims find that seeing them makes the history they have read about come alive.

The important thing is to visit with the right intention and good manners: to learn, reflect and remember — not to seek blessings from stones or walls.

Jabal al-Nour and the Cave of Hira

Jabal al-Nour, “the Mountain of Light”, is where the Prophet ï·º used to retreat to the Cave of Hira. It is here that the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed. The mountain is about 4 km north-east of Masjid al-Haram.

The climb uses a stepped path. Fit adults usually take around 45 minutes to an hour to reach the top, and it is steep in places. Elderly pilgrims and young children often prefer to view it from the base. In recent years the Hira Cultural District, with an exhibition about the revelation, has opened at the foot of the mountain.

Driver’s tip: If you plan to climb, go straight after Fajr. By mid-morning the rocks are hot, and there is little shade on the path.

Jabal Thawr

Jabal Thawr is south of Makkah. The Prophet ï·º and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) hid in a cave on this mountain for three nights during the Hijrah to Madinah. The climb is longer and harder than Jabal al-Nour, so most tours stop at the base for a short visit.

Mina

Mina is the valley of white tents, about 7 km east of the Haram. During Hajj, pilgrims stay here and stone the Jamarat. Outside Hajj the tents are empty, which gives you a clear view of how large the area is. Tours usually drive through and stop near the Jamarat bridge.

Muzdalifah

Muzdalifah lies between Mina and Arafat. Hajj pilgrims spend the night here under the open sky and collect pebbles for the stoning. Masjid al-Mash’ar al-Haram is located here.

Arafat and Jabal al-Rahmah

Arafat is where pilgrims stand on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah — the most important day of Hajj. Jabal al-Rahmah, the “Mount of Mercy”, is the small hill in the plain of Arafat. The Prophet ï·º delivered his Farewell Sermon at Arafat during his only Hajj. Masjid Nimrah is on the western edge of Arafat.

Arafat is about 20 km from the Haram, so it is usually the furthest stop on the tour.

Other places often included

  • Masjid al-Jinn — near Jannat al-Mu’alla, associated with the story of the jinn listening to the Qur’an.
  • Jannat al-Mu’alla — the historic cemetery where Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) is buried.
  • Masjid Aisha (Masjid al-Tan’im) — the nearest point outside the Haram boundary, used to enter Ihram for another Umrah. See our Masjid Ayesha Ihram guide.
  • The Kiswa factory and the Two Holy Mosques Architecture Exhibition — when open to visitors; opening arrangements change, so ask before you plan.

  • Dress modestly and wear comfortable shoes — some paths are rocky.
  • Carry water, especially from April to October.
  • Avoid practices with no basis in the Sunnah, such as tying cloth or writing on rocks.
  • Keep children close at busy viewpoints.
  • Ask your driver to wait at each stop so you are not rushing.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Makkah Ziyarat tour take?

A relaxed private Ziyarat tour of the main sites takes about 4 to 5 hours by car. If you want to climb Jabal al-Nour to the Cave of Hira, add 1 to 2 hours.

Is Ziyarat part of Umrah?

No. Ziyarat is an optional visit to historical places. It is not a rite of Umrah, but many pilgrims find it meaningful and educational.

Can elderly pilgrims do the Makkah Ziyarat tour?

Yes. Most sites can be seen from the car or with a short walk. Climbing Jabal al-Nour or Jabal Thawr is steep, so elderly pilgrims usually view them from the base.

What is the best time of day for Ziyarat in Makkah?

Early morning, straight after Fajr, is best. The temperature is lower, the roads are quieter, and you are back before Dhuhr.

Rules for visas, permits and train services change from season to season. Always confirm the latest details on the official Nusuk platform or with your airline before you travel. This guide was last reviewed in September 2026.
